Scotland's ancient Atlantic rainforest is under threat |
Think of the rain and most of us want to imagine a heated, outdoor place like the Amazon. However, there are also rain forests in winter and these are an important part of the planet's forest network. It is sad to see that tropical rainfall does not only face the same kind of problem. Scotland, part of the United Kingdom, is right here at home, yet we are failing to preserve and preserve its ancient rain forest.
About the Atlantic Rain Forest in Scotland
A small portion of the 5,000 acres of Scottish wood is referred to as the Atlantic Rainforest thanks to the very rare marine vegetation there. But over-grazing by deer and farmers and invasive plant species and diseases are destroying the forests under our noses.
Aggressive rhododendrons are found in 40% of rain forest sites and reduce upstream lands with dense knots of its branches and evergreen leaves. Ash dieback is affecting ash woods in the north and west. And pollution and climate change are damaging every aspect of the forest.
Charities and others cooperate in forest conservation
The Atlantic Woodland Alliance is a group of 16 charities and other organizations, and they are proposing that we get rid of newcomers like Sitkar spruce and rhododendrons, bring thousands of acres of harmful invaders out of the rainforest and into more new highlands nearby. Planting more native trees like oak and birch should be assisted as well. However, it does not address long-term over-grazing that has been occurring continuously in the background for long periods of time.
Why Scotland's Rainforest is important
Scotland's ancient rainforest is even rarer and more valuable than the tropical rainforest. It is found only on the west coast and inland islands, a great place rich in native oak, birch, ash, pine and hazel. For success it needs light, wet, clean air from the Atlantic and there are plenty of notable lichens, fungi, chaos, liverworts and ferns. Many of them are unique to the forest.
Take urgent action
Fortunately for the planet, it was not too late to take action. There are many conservationists who are interested in ensuring that forests can become larger and achieve more overall health. The alliance is growing rapidly, adding more members to the influential list that already includes names such as Forestry and Land Scotland, Loch Lomond and Trojas National Park Authority, National Trust for Scotland, Plantlife Scotland and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
